Review Figure Design: Categories, Evidence and Layout
Organize the review question and literature evidence before drawing. A review figure should separate categories, relationships and applications rather than placing every term in one layer.
Build the content framework first
Prepare the review question, section outline and a list of categories with their supporting references. Mark peer-level categories separately from materials, design strategies and applications. Agree what should be omitted or split into another figure.
Match the layout to the information
A circular layout can group categories around a common topic. A matrix supports repeated comparisons across shared criteria. Separate panels work when the reader must move between information levels or stages. The PDMS membrane case places membrane roles near the center, strategies in sectors and applications outside.
Define the collaboration and output
Confirm the number of figures, labels and references, the amount of original drawing, revision scope and which objects must remain editable. The designer organizes the visual structure; the authors approve the scientific taxonomy and cited relationships. Platform subscriptions and commissioned design are separate services.
