How to Draw a Research Mechanism Diagram
Name the objects and define each relationship before drawing arrows. Separate preparation, application and local mechanisms, and review every scientific connection with the authors.
Start with an object-and-relationship table
For each object record its name, location, relevant state and source. For each connection record its direction, meaning and evidence. Activation, inhibition, transport and process order should not share an unexplained arrow. Where a relationship is proposed, make that status explicit in the legend or caption.
Separate three levels of explanation
Preparation shows how a material or system is made. Application locates it in an apparatus, organism or tissue. A local mechanism explains a selected interface, compartment or molecular relationship. These levels can share a page without being merged into one physical scale.
The hydrogel archive connects components to an eye and then to local insets. The catalytic interface places molecules above a continuous substrate and distinguishes selected sites with color.
Add perspective and enlargement for a reason
A 3D view may establish depth but must not invent geometry, distances or atomic arrangements. Identify structure sources through the 3D-LAB workflow. Use a local enlargement only when its parent location remains identifiable; the inset guide separates enlargement from resolution enhancement.
Review the mechanism before styling
Check whether an arrow states causation, movement or merely the next preparation step. Verify names, reaction participants, sequence and compartment boundaries. Then standardize colors, line roles and text at final size. Keep relevant controls and measurements in their own panels instead of using the illustration to stand in for evidence.
For focused tasks see catalytic mechanisms, materials chemistry and hydrogel networks. Mechanism-diagram services use a separately agreed scientific brief.

Sources and scope
Sources apply within their stated scope. Archive records describe existing work; international account access and checkout remain closed.
